Bio:Pedro Martinez was born on October 25, 1971, in Manoguayabo, D.R. He started his career in 1988 when the Los Angeles Dodgers signed him as a free agent. He made only two appearances with the Dodgers in 1992, but then made 65 appearances the next year, all but two of them in relief. Many believed that Martinez was not big enough physically to be a starting pitcher. However, once Martinez was traded to the Montreal Expos prior to 1994, he proved those doubters wrong.
Martinez was immediately converted to a starting pitcher in Montreal and he quickly transformed into one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. His breakout season came in 1997 when he posted a 17-8 record with an incredible 1.90 ERA and 305 strikeouts. That season he also won his first Cy Young Award as the NL’s top pitcher. Since that year, Martinez has won two more Cy Young Awards (1999 and 2000, both with the Boston Red Sox) and has established himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball history. Despite diminished statistics the last two seasons with the New York Mets due to injuries, Martinez’s career totals so far are still very impressive: 209 wins, 380 games started, 3,030 strikeouts, and a 2.80 ERA.
