Joe Sakic Career Biography and Statistics

Joe Sakic was born on July 7, 1969 in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. He showed great skill and promise at a young age and had an outstanding career in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Lethbridge/Swift Current Broncos. He scored 133 points in his first year (1986-87) in the WHL and 160 points in his second year (1987-88). His performance in 1987-88 was good enough to win him WHL MVP and Canadian Major Junior Player of the Year.
          The Quebec Nordiques made Sakic the 15th overall selection of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. However, Sakic decided to stay in the WHL for another year to get ready for the NHL. He has spent his entire 18-year NHL career with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche (the club moved to Colorado following the 1994-95 season). Throughout his entire career Sakic has been known as a solid player with exceptional leadership skills. A thirteen-time All-Star, Sakic has won two Stanley Cup Championships, the Conn Smythe Trophy, Hart Memorial Trophy, Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, and Lester B. Pearson Award. Sakic has also won a combined four gold medals in the Olympics, World Championships, World Cup of Hockey, and the World Junior Championships.
          Sakic has been a consistent scorer despite the fact that he has missed plenty of time over his career due to various injuries. He is currently the leading scorer among all active players and has recorded six seasons of 100 or more points. Through the 2006-07 season, Sakic has accumulated 1,589 total points, 979 assists, and 610 goals in 1,319 games played.
