NFL Football Information and History

The National Football League (NFL) is the premier professional American football league. An member controlled unincorporated associate, the league was formed by 11 teams in 1920 and was known as the American Professional Football Association. It was not until 1922 that the association changed its name to the National Football League. Currently the league comprises thirty-two teams from American cities and regions. The league is evenly divided into two conferences (American Football Conference and National Football Conference) and each conference is evenly divided into four divisions of four teams each. The regular season is a seventeen week schedule in which each team has one bye week and plays sixteen games. A round robin of six games is played against divisional rivals, with the remaining ten games a combination of inter-division and inter-conference games. The regular season runs from September through December. The NFL playoffs play between six teams from each conference. This single elimination tournament determines which team from each conference will play in the league championship; the Super Bowl.
