NCAA Football

College football is American football played by teams of student athletes from American colleges, universities, and military schools. College football was the venue through which American football first gained popularity in the United States and remains extremely popular today among students, alumni, and other fans of the sport.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) formed following a 1906 threat from President Theodore Roosevelt in which he threatened to ban the sport of football. His threat was issued in light of a dramatic rise in violence during play and injuries and deaths which resulted from the violent play.

College Football predated professional football by several decades, and it was not until the middle of the 20th century that professional league football came to be the dominant football medium. Even today, college football attracts a greater audience than professional football.
